Background

Why MindMatters Plus?

It has been estimated that between 20% and 30% of young people will require additional support by way of a range of promotion, prevention and intervention strategies (WHO, 1994). MindMatters Plus recognised the importance of a whole school approach informed by the World Health Organization's Health Promoting Schools Framework. This framework acknowledges that effective health education requires a comprehensive approach covering curriculum, school ethos, and the relationship between the school and local community (WHO, 1994).

In order to effectively reduce mental health problems, MindMatters Plus took a number of approaches, including promotion, prevention and early intervention. Such an approach recognised that a range of broad and specific strategies were necessary. The importance of partnerships with education and health services, community agencies and parents was also examined.

Nature of the initiative

In response to a call for expressions of interest, 17 demonstration schools were selected nationally to participate. These schools represented the three education systems (state, Catholic and independent) and varied in size, location and socioeconomic profiles. Demonstration schools were selected on the basis of whether they used MindMatters as a universal approach and whether school leadership and staff were committed to the initiative.

Complementary prevention and early intervention programs that addressed a range of mental health issues were made available as part of the MindMatters Plus initiative. These programs included initiatives with a focus on mental health promotion and early intervention.

MindMatters Plus also supported schools in utilising computer and internet technology.
