Complementary Programs Implemented by Taminmin High School, NT
2004
Kids Helpline Peer Skills Training
Taminmin conducted the program through a local provider. The school psychologist had previous experience with the program and provided ongoing support to student leaders who were trained in the program.
Teen Triple P
Two staff members were trained in the program. This school also has access to an accredited provider in Darwin with whom the school hopes to work. The school nurse and the home liaison officer were trained in the program. The school envisages that they will best be able to implement this program through brief individual interventions and possibly using the local provider for group interventions.
ASIST Training
The program was implemented at two levels. Firstly a one-day whole of staff presentation on 'Suicide Awareness' was conducted. In general this training was well received, although the school commented on the need for staff to be well prepared for the topic prior to the training event. Secondly, ten key staff were selected to attend the in-depth two-day training. The program was viewed very positively and staff felt they had received valuable training in being able to appropriately address suicide concerns.
RAP A and RAP P (Resourceful Adolescent Program Adolescent/Parent)
The school indicated that they selected RAP A because the workbook format meant it could fit in with curriculum constraints. RAP P training was also used because it was felt to be important to engage caregivers in accordance with the holistic MindMatters framework.
2003
Adolescents Coping with Emotions (ACE)
The ACE program was implemented with a number of Year 9 students.
Seasons for Growth
The school undertook this program because it was generally recognised that the process of dealing with grief and loss could be very demanding on the staff involved. A clear need for formal and informal debriefing structures was identified.
RAP A and RAP P (Resourceful Adolescent Program Adolescent/Parent)
RAP A was trialled with a targeted group of Year 9 students, as was the RAP P program.
