Pilot evaluation program
The MindMatters pilot evaluation program was conducted in 1998/99. It involved an evaluation of the rollout of the professional development program and an evaluation of its outcomes for schools ('in-depth evaluation').

Methodology
The professional development evaluation comprised four main activities:
- an internal evaluation (undertaken by the MindMatters State Project Officers)
- a questionnaire (sent to a sample of people who had attended professional development)
- key informant interviews
- a qualitative evaluation of the process and outcomes of professional development at the school level.
The in-depth evaluation, comprising both qualitative and quantitative methods, was used with 15 case study schools. The 15 schools comprised one government school in each state and territory (except Western Australia), two Catholic schools in NSW and one in Victoria and South Australia, one Independent school in NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland, and one school run predominantly by and for an Indigenous community.
The following tools were used with the selected schools. With the exception of the first, they can be linked with any of the audit tools in the MindMatters resources.

Interim reports
The following interim reports are relevant because they contain information about recent theories and case studies.
- Schools Case Study Interim Report July 2004
This interim report analyses qualitative interviews conducted in five case study schools. Each of these schools had been using MindMatters for at least two years. This interim report is useful to all schools that are interested in the MindMatters resources. - The second MindMatters interim evaluation report includes the annotated bibliography titled 'Current theories and thinking on school change'. The bibliography was compiled by Dr Tom Griffiths and Ms Deborah O'Neill from the Faculty of Education at the University of Newcastle as part of the evaluation by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health.
