Effective Schools
Masters, G. N. (2004). What makes a good school? Retrieved on 10 November 2004 from http://www.acer.edu.au/enews/0405_Good_Teacher.html
In this short paper, Masters (2004) writes that effective schools:
- have strong and effective school leaders whose primary goal is to establish a culture of learning throughout the school, with a high priority on professional learning, on collaboration between effective schools, and on building partnerships between schools and community
- see learning as the central purpose of the school, with high expectations of students and belief in the ability of every student
- have teachers with thorough and up-to-date knowledge of how students learn particular subjects, who know their students well and who encourage the development of both foundational skills and high-level thinking and creativity
- have outstanding school cultures, which celebrate diversity, feature a sense of belonging and pride, engagement with learning, safe physical and social settings, and show continued commitment to improvement
- have well-developed systems for evaluation and monitoring performance, including keeping stakeholders informed
- have high levels of parent and community involvement.
