Communities do Matter Focus Module Reports
Brisbane 29 April, 2010
Jane Taylor (State Project Officer for Queensland) and Aaron Ken (Community Partnerships Officer) facilitated this workshop held at the Novotel. Representatives from the Queensland Department of Education, the Catholic Education Office, Independent Schools Queensland, the Australian Red Cross, and schools in the education region of Greater Brisbane attended the workshop. This module explored the diversity within communities and how schools could work in respectful partnership to enhance school and community mental health and wellbeing, planning and action.

Ipswich 1 September, 2009
Jane Taylor, Queensland’s State Project Officer, and Kanat Wano, Coordinator, Community Partnerships, facilitated this module held at the Metro International. Educators attended the module from the Department of Education, Independent Schools Queensland and schools in the Moreton Education Region. This module explored the diversity within communities and how schools could work in respectful partnership to enhance school and community mental health and wellbeing, planning and action.
Feedback – which outcomes participants chose to work on:
- ‘Connection, relationships, hope.’
- ‘Valuing all input and insight to shape a positive community.’
- ‘Resilience and empowerment.’
- ‘Parents’ involvement in the school.’
Cairns 27 February 2009
This workshop covered how culture, community, identity and family contribute to a sense of identity, wellbeing, connection and self-worth. This module explored diversity within communities and looked at how schools can work in respectful partnership to enhance school and community mental health and wellbeing planning and action. The workshop introduced a series of seminars and workshops for community leaders, health agencies, Indigenous Education workers, Aboriginal young people and others interested in community development.
Representatives from Catholic colleges and state high schools attended the workshop, which was held at the Rydges Tradewinds in Cairns. This workshop was facilitated by Kanat Wano (Co-ordinator, Community Partnerships) and Jane Taylor (State Project Officer, Queensland).
Participant feedback included the below.
- ‘Networking & finding out other views about community is always beneficial.’
- ‘I enjoyed the relaxed style of presentation which at the same time kept us focussed and on task. Great opportunities to engage and share. Good atmosphere (eg willingness to listen and participate in a range of settings).’
- ‘Covered potential areas of realisation; taking small steps can give the result.’
