Level Two Planning Workshop Reports

Cairns 18–19 May, 2010

This workshop was facilitated by Lydia Najlepszy. Two schools from this area have now had staff successfully complete both the Level One Introductory Workshop and the Level Two Planning Workshop. The Level Two Planning Workshop is directed at school core teams of at least four people with experience of MindMatters. The core team develops a school action plan with a view to measuring the progress made by the school in the area of mental health and wellbeing. Some of the topics covered over the two days included student diversity, protective and risk factors, leadership, and policies for mental health and wellbeing.
Areas chosen to work on included:

  • students’ connectivity
  • improving whole community connectivity
  • improving social, emotional and academic learning for students
  • initially heightening staff understanding of the need to improve student health and wellbeing.

Brisbane 17–18 February, 2010

Jane Taylor, MindMatters Queensland State Project Officer facilitated the Level Two Planning Workshop held at the Novotel. Twenty participants from four high schools in the Greater Brisbane region attended this workshop that is directed at school core teams, of at least four people, with experience of MindMatters. The core team develops a school action plan with a view to measuring the progress made by the school in the areas of mental health and wellbeing. Some of the topics included student diversity, protective and risk factors, leadership, and policies for mental health and wellbeing.

  • Very comfortable atmosphere created for participants; task-oriented, purposeful approach; but also flexible.’

  • Great to have the time to discuss and plan our situation.’

  • Very effective and flexible; lots of opportunity for discussion.’

Mt Isa 28–29 July, 2009

MindMatters Associate Project Officer, Dean McManus, facilitated this workshop, with two schools attending. The Level Two Planning Workshop is directed at school core teams, of at least four people, who have experience of MindMatters. The core team develops a school action plan with a view to measuring the progress made by the school in the area of mental health and wellbeing. Topics include Student Diversity, Protective and Risk Factors, Leadership, and Policies for Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Ipswich 21-22 May 2009
Sixteen participants from schools on the South Coast, Greater Brisbane and the Moreton Education Regions of Queensland participated in the Level Two Planning Workshop facilitated by Jane Taylor in Ipswich.

The Level Two Planning Workshop was directed at school core teams of four or more with the core team developing an action plan for the school with a view to measuring progress in mental health and wellbeing. The workshop also looked at leadership, student diversity, staff mental health and wellbeing, protective and risk factors, curriculum mapping, staff professional development, marketing and communication.

Participant feedback included the following.

  • ‘Flexibility with what I could/could not understand was great. Made me feel more confident.’
  • ‘The planning information and the opportunity to plan was essential whilst we have the information & resources available.’

Brisbane 25-26 March 2009

This Level Two Planning Workshop at the Riverside Reception Centre in New Farm was facilitated by NSW/QLD Associate Project Officer, Maryanne Vorreiter. Three core groups participated in the two days.

The workshop looked at leadership, student diversity, staff mental health and wellbeing, protective and risk factors, curriculum mapping, staff professional development, marketing and communication. The Level Two process is based on a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing with schools developing a comprehensive and considered plan using the MindMatters Implementation Model, the MindMatters Planning Cycle and other planning tools.

Participant feedback included the below.

Caloundra 10-11 March 2009

This MindMatters Level Two Planning Workshop was facilitated by NSW/QLD Associate Project Officer, Maryanne Vorreiter. Core teams from two schools attended this workshop at Rydges Oasis Resort at Caloundra. These core teams developed school action plans with a view to measuring progress in the area of mental health and wellbeing.

The workshop looked at leadership, student diversity, staff mental health and wellbeing, protective factors, risk factors, curriculum mapping, staff professional development, marketing and communication.

Participant feedback included the below.

  • ‘Extremely helpful training – excellent presentation, great facilitator of discussion. Jargon free - real training.’
  • ‘I feel more ‘skilled’ to implement our initiative(s) in a collaborative way.’
