What has been happening in Victoria?

The State project Officers have visited Victorian the schools that have begun the MindMatters Level Two Planning process, to support them with their planning and acheivement, and to, chat about the MindMatters Recognition process. Some schools are using the MindMatters Recognition process to validate their emphasis on student wellbeing. Meetings with school leadership about beginning the  process are taking place.

Staughton College are undertaking whole school approach to planning, based on the Health Promoting Schools Framework. Teams of staff are working on each aspect such as, curriculum, ethos and partnerships. Schools are often so immersed in their approaches to mental health, that they require, their action and progress to be independently reflected. This enables them to appreciate the significant progress that they have made.

There is a growing understanding about, what mental health actually is, in a school context. School personnel are reporting changes in relationship building with students and report the changes made in their approach to student behaviour management.

Professional development

Keep an eye out for our poster – MindMatters Victoria has put together a poster of all the events in Victoria over 2010. The poster will be sent to all secondary schools in Victoria in first term. In March 2010, a copy of the poster will also be available in the wellbeing issue of DEECD magazine Shine.

All MindMatters PD has been accredited and assessed against the professional standards by the Victorian Institute of Teaching. The list of all MindMatters PD for 2010 is also available on the VIT PD website Pdi and on the MindMatters website.

Regional student wellbeing/MindMatters groups

MindMatters works in partnership with many community and health agencies and with regional Department of Education officers.

The State Project Officers work throughout Victoria with the regional Student Wellbeing/MindMatters Groups. These groups are located in each Department of Education and Early Childhood Development region of Victoria.

The regional groups facilitate professional development on a range of mental health issues and liaise with the education, community and health sectors.

If you or your school are interested in having a MindMatters PD workshop in your school or region, please contact Vivienne Archdall or Brendan Hallinan.
