joyce_lewis_affleckJoyce Lewis-Affleck is the WA State Project Officer for MindMatters. Joyce has worked in a range of education, mental health and community settings promoting inclusive practice, empowerment and engagement. She has delivered professional development and community development programs for mental health and wellbeing; supporting individuals and families, schools, and health and human service agencies to engender access and equity, build supportive environments and build connections. Joyce has a strong commitment to improving the social, emotional and educational outcomes for all members of the school community.

Joyce has 15 years experience in a variety of roles within the mental health sector including community development, mental health promotion/prevention/early intervention, service and program development, and workforce development and training. In addition Joyce has experience as a classroom teacher in secondary schooling and adult learning.

MindMatters professional development

MindMatters offers highly interactive and engaging workshops relevant to people from the education (Catholic, independent and government schools) and health sectors in metropolitan and rural and remote centres. Community agencies and organisations that work closely with schools are welcome to attend MindMatters workshops. MindMatters WA

As well as the MindMatters professional development workshops, the State Project Officer will work with schools to:

  • provide in-school support for schools undertaking Level Two Planning Workshops
  • implement the MindMatters Recognition process. Some schools are using the MindMatters Recognition process to validate their emphasis on student wellbeing. Meetings with school leadership about beginning the process are taking place
  • facilitate whole school staff professional development about MindMatters approaches to promotion, prevention and early intervention around mental health and wellbeing
  • embed MindMatters within the policies and recommended structures of all three Western Australian education sectors
  • make links to key initiatives within schools, including Values Education, the National Safe Schools Framework and Principals Australia projects such as Dare To Lead and KidsMatter.
  • engage with Aboriginal communities to develop MindMatters across the school and community through the Communities Do Matter Focus Module.
  • assist and support young people to promote mental health in their school communities and further develop the Youth Empowerment Process
  • promote staff mental health and wellbeing using Staff Matters
